British Broadcasting Corporation Gaza Film Considered a 'Major' Infringement of Broadcasting Regulations, Declares UK Media Regulator

The British broadcaster committed a "significant breach" of media regulations by failing to disclose that the narrator of a programme about Gaza was the offspring of a Hamas representative, as determined by UK media regulator Ofcom.

An probe by Ofcom into Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone has concluded that the documentary was "substantially inaccurate".

The head of the BBC had previously apologised, stating there had been "a significant failing in relation to accuracy".

The regulator has directed the corporation to air a evening statement about its findings.

"Since this amounts to a serious breach of our code, we are directing the BBC to broadcast a statement of our findings against it on BBC2 at 21:00, with a timing to be confirmed," the statement read.

'Possibility to Damage Confidence'

The watchdog's announcement stated: "Our probe concluded that the documentary's omission to reveal that the voice's father served in a role in the Hamas-administered authority was significantly deceptive.

"Consequently that the audience did not have essential details which may have been extremely pertinent to their evaluation of the voice and the content he shared.

"Confidence is at the center of the bond between a television network and its audience, notably for a public service broadcaster such as the public broadcaster.

"This error had the possibility to damage the significantly high amounts of trust that the public would have placed in a documentary produced by the BBC about the Israel-Gaza war."

The film was pulled from iPlayer in the month of February after the presenter's familial connections were revealed, and in July an corporation's own inquiry concluded it infringed the organization's content policies on factual correctness.

A corporation official stated: "The regulator's decision is in line with the findings of Peter Johnston's review, that there was a significant failing in the programme in relation to the BBC's Editorial Guidelines on accuracy, which corresponds to Rule 2.2 of the authority's broadcasting regulations.

"We have apologised for this and we comply with the regulator's ruling in full. We will adhere to the sanction as soon as the date and wording are determined."
