Minister Says MoD Investigating Potential Threat from Chinese Cars, as Staff Advised to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Cars.

A defence official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the possible threats posed by Chinese cars, and personnel have been instructed to avoid talking about classified matters in all cars.

Safety Guidance for MoD Staff

During a recently aired appearance on LBC, a defence minister addressed reports that MoD staff have been told not to talk about classified material while travelling in China-made vehicles.

The minister explained that the MoD is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however noted that safety is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.

We have a collection of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any kind of car, due to the increasing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential conversations in secure locations. This is a prudent and sensible thing for anyone worried about safety.

When it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Wider Defence Background

This revelation follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese buses, which could enable China to switch off public transport and bring chaos to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel has been shining laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.

This broader defence situation highlights the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in all areas of official activities, from transport usage to communication practices.
