Our Top Record of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Secures the Number One Place.

On the surface, Lux could seem closer to a challenging scholarly quiz than the latest pop album from an artist who just had a previous hit featured a global K-pop star. Split across four different parts and performed in thirteen languages, it is a breathtaking orchestral-influenced work investigating feminine mystery, religious ascent, and bodily transformation, frequently through the perspective of various female saints. The end of a love affair—a theme treated with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—is launched upwards on this record, buoyed by the lush sound of a major orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning composer among a vast roll call of contributors. Its sheer daring alone makes the work of other pop stars seem quite small.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

That this album manages to transcend dry academic posturing is nearly a miracle, and full credit going to the artist. Although this is not her first album to fuse the past and the present, the stakes are far higher on Lux, with the balancing act more dramatic. The element that truly elevates this fourth release, outside of its multilayered tunes, dense arrangements, and inherent drama, is a core sense of joy. Much like the legendary artist at her peak, you find a wondrous quality to Rosalía's singing which sweeps the listener into its whirlwind. Even when she is breaking hearts apart, you nevertheless want to be right there through the journey.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

That playful spirit shines clearly on a stirring Italian song inspired by a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool for several moments. Then, everything drops away, to reveal there's a spontaneous giggle followed by a comment before a hilariously exaggerated orchestral crescendo crashes down with cartoonish force. The track immediately segues into the frenetic single featuring galloping orchestration, an imposing choir, and a surprise appearance from the artist herself.

"The charm with this album is that the listener never exactly understand—nor wish to predict—where it is going to next."

Nearly each track ends at a totally different place than how it started. One moment explores the fleeting nature of celebrity over a featherlight orchestration only to collapsing into electronic chaos. Elsewhere, a song that recalls the artist's earlier rhythmic style begins off moody and brooding, featuring menacing beats, before sudden traditional handclaps and an angelic chorus enter to soften its jagged corners.

The Bridge Between Experiment & Accessibility

A key achievement on Lux involves straddling the gap between bold experimentation and broad appeal. This is little surprise that the album has achieved the artist's highest-charting release to break into the upper reaches of key charts: its heart contains a collection of truly catchy hits. A song performed entirely in the English language swells on a refrain that feels to collect increasingly nagging melodies as it spins upward. That feat is echoed on a different powerful track that grows and constricts, intertwining multiple tunes as an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like song charms via its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with cultural impact of contemporary heartbreak songs, eviscerating an ex- lover labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals carry a sharp edge, like a fairy-tale character concealing a blade: "Top prize in acting like a motherfucker / You've the podium of disappointment."

A Maximalist Feast for the Soul

Lux represents popular music on a maximalist scale, a hungry grasp for capital-A artistry in an era of impending AI-generated blankness. It rejects self-absorption for glorious elevation, crafting a dramatic drama that skillfully manages its built-in ridiculousness. This is a deep source of buried treasure that requires time to completely explore but doesn't feels like hard work. While other major releases of 2025 felt like a meager meal, Lux offers a sumptuous feast where the characters around it, perhaps intoxicated on sacred wine, flit from conversations about ancient saints, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and common stories about hopeless men. It is a contemporary musical from pop's truly restlessly inventive practitioner.
