Pat Cummins Set to Play a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not just his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
