Survivors of Catholic Clergy Sex Abuse Express Optimism After Meeting with the Pontiff

People who experienced sexual abuse by Catholic clergy have expressed renewed hope following their initial encounter with Pope Leo at the Vatican.

The board president, heading the anti-abuse organization, commented that the pontiff's decision to engage with them so early in his leadership spoke volumes about his commitment to tackling the issue.

Worldwide Zero-Tolerance Approach Advocated

The group is pushing for a worldwide strict approach that would defrock any clergy member who confesses to or is proven of abusing a minor. This policy has already been adopted in the US.

The Pontiff recognized that there is "opposition in certain regions of the world" to this proposal, according to the representative.

"Everyone was practical when we acknowledged that there is pushback," they stated.

Inherited Challenge

The current pontiff, who assumed the role in May, has taken on this persistent issue that has haunted the Catholic Church for decades.

Previous efforts to address the situation included an historic meeting on child abuse within the Church and changes to church laws to explicitly criminalize abuse.

Deeply Felt Connection

For the representative, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, the campaign for global implementation of the measure is personal. The North American advocate revealed they were victimized by a priest who was subsequently transferred between different parishes.

"Hopefully this will set the tone for his leadership, because we want to collaborate with him," Hickey stated. "Both sides share the common objective, we seek to end abuse by religious officials."

Significant Encounter

Multiple representatives of the organization, which includes victims and supporters from more than 30 countries, engaged with the Pope in his official residence.

The discussion, initially planned for a brief period, extended to a full hour, during which the religious leader "primarily heard to us," according to Hickey.

The pontiff was described as "quite empathetic" when hearing the account of a female survivor abused at a Catholic residential school for native youth in Canada.

They added the leader was "compassionate" about their personal experience and seemed "modest, funny, and approachable."

"Survivors have long wanted a voice in discussions and I didn't perceive like he was giving us lip service," they commented. "I believed like he was sincere, realistic, and receptive and keen to collaborate with us."

Church Regulations Changes

The group is hoping that revisions to canon law will facilitate the implementation of the strict approach globally.

They have consulted specialists and gathered documents that they plan to present to the pontiff.

"He appeared engaged in looking at it," Hickey noted.

Accountability Highlighted

A recently released Vatican-commissioned report emphasized the "necessity of a streamlined protocol for the resignation and/or removal of religious officials or staff in cases of abuse or failure to act."

The report also noted that victims repeatedly stressed the "urgent need for bishops and major superiors to be made responsible for inaction and concealment."

Moving Forward

Hickey revealed they informed the Pope at the start of their meeting: "This is as much a challenge for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

After the encounter, they expressed hope for future change.

"We realise it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the end of the day, uniting and establishing a connection and continuing to strengthen that bond is a step in the correct path," they stated.

Hickey added that they told with the pontiff: "Even though it's a dark chapter, I believe like we can alter how the story concludes - he appreciated that."
